Myocardial mitochondrial changes occurring during ischemia. The changes to mitochondria occurring during ischemia are noted. These changes extend following the restoration of blood flow and oxygen delivery to the myocardium (reperfusion) and significantly decrease myocardial function and cell viability. Mitochondrial transplantation (the direct injection of viable exogenous mitochondria) into the ischemic myocardium, just prior to reperfusion significantly enhances myocardial function and cell viability
